Sophie hat das große Unglück, die älteste von drei Töchtern zu sein. Jeder in Ingari weiß, dass die Älteste dazu bestimmt ist, kläglich zu versagen, sollte sie jemals ihr Zuhause verlassen, um ihr Glück zu suchen. Und so geschieht, was geschehen muss: Sophie zieht den Zorn einer Hexe auf sich und wird verflucht.
Ihre einzige Rettung liegt im wandelnden Schloss. Dort wohnt der mächtige, aber herzlose Zauberer Howl, der sie von ihrem Fluch erlösen könnte. Wenn Sophie ihm nur davon erzählen könnte, doch das verhindert der Zauber, der auf ihr liegt.
Also wird Sophie die Hausdame des wandelnden Schlosses und versucht zwischen zynischen Feuerdämonen und magischen Welten, ihre alte Gestalt zurückzuerlangen.
